What reason can I give to obtain copy of my contract?

I'm looking for for a new job as have been at current company for ages and not progressing as quickly as I would like so looking to go elsewhere to get promotion. I'm subject to post termination restrictions so need to check these but I've lost my contract. Need to ask Hr but don't want to alert them. What possible reason could I use that would be credible?

Just ask them. You don't need to give a reason

you want to check pension and holiday entitlement?

Mortgage application. Wanting to rent a property. Etc

You could say your partner has accidentally thrown out a file of important papers and you are obtaining copies?

Yeah, no need for a reason. And I would guess half a dozen reasons for wanting it before checking leaving restrictions.

I'd just say that you realised you don't have a copy in your personal records.

There's no reason for HR to be suspicious or withhold it from you (having done HR work, I wouldn't bat an eyelid unless you or someone else had already flagged an issue to me).

Just ask

I work in HR and we get daily requests for people's contract. We don't even think about the reasons, we're just pleased that it's an easy request to fulfill!

Or you are doing wills / life admin and realised that ...

Do I presume that you are not on some Cloud system where you can retrieve info like this for yourself?

We get requests for contract copies all the time (I work in HR) and we don't think anything of it. No need to give a reason!
