Hi there, depends on what you want to do- various levels in schools for TA's and differs from LEA to LEA- Uni courses more for acces to teaching , I would look at NVQ's for classroom assistants , then you could go onto Higher Level Teaching Asst, probably good to get in some work experience as well.

Hope this helps!

You would need to be working to do HLTA though

nearlyemptynester · 06/02/2008 20:14

You would, but it is something to aim for isn't it? and OP did ask re qualifications!
Try looking on your LEA website for jobs and what they require.

I'm a TA & there are quite a few posts on here about the subject if you search. I did a distance learning BTEC before I started, just to know more about what I was talking about when I went for interviews. I also volunteered at my sons school. Are you thinking primary or secondary? In my experience primary are more hard to come by (unless you are in the know with the school!), secondary TA are used in a slightly different role - I follow pupils from class to class & so cover the whole curriculum. Dept TAs just stick to one subject area

You dont actually have to be in paid employment to do a HLTA. You just need to have guaranteed access to learners, it can be done as a volunteer with the support of a letter from the head teacher.

Am doing HLTA atm, one of the sections is regularly taking a class so more or less impossible without working there.

Whizzz · 06/02/2008 20:40

and also don't you need a certain level of experience in the job to start HLTA?

missnevermind · 06/02/2008 20:47

Sorry My mistake
It was the Foundation Degree for Teaching Assistants not the HLTA that just needs the guaranteed hours.

roisin · 06/02/2008 21:07

How's the HLTA going Nymphadora?

Nymphadora · 07/02/2008 10:24

Its going ok BUT may be changing classes after 1/2 term (see staff room thread!) so may change some of my task4's at the last minute. HAve 3 good ones but other 2 aren't up to much!
