Teachers out there - Who do I put down for my reference?

I am applying for a job and I am not sure who I put down for my references. Do I need to put the Head Teacher (even though I only did 3 months at my last school to help my friend out - who happens to be the current Head of Department)? Do I put the old Head of Department or do I put the current Head of Department (my friend who I alo worked with at another school)?

ANy advice on this would be great.

I'd put your friend down but as the HOD you last worked for, not your friend. Don't you have to put your last head teacher though?

That is what I thought. In the end I put the last Head and it will probably get passed to my friend to do anyway.
