When I worked in an office, I got through it by making my own little world - there was my desk, with my stuff, my work and the work relationships I needed to have. I just tried to rise above the rest. I did actually get on well with some people and I'm not bad at working in a team, but it was the whole atmosphere and ethos and the things people cared about making a drama out of - I just could not be arsed and I totally ignored it. Yes I got a reputation for being prickly and I also got laughed at - sometimes affectionately though - for burying my nose in my work and refusing to join in with gossip and messing about. But after all that, when I left, people were really nice to me and I still work a lot with that company (on a freelance basis).
Some people just aren't cut out for it. Whoops, even if you can dream about going freelance, make a plan even if you don't plan to put it into practise yet (or ever...) - that could help. I know i used to dream about it.
