Ok, story is as follows, in Sept 2010 DD starts independent secondary school, she didn't get scholarship as we'd hoped so we are looking at full fees gulp.

I have 2.5 years to retrain as something else and get a job that will pay fairly well.

Am thinking along book keeping lines (have a small business myself at moment so have done some accounting of my own).

Any other ideas? Don't like blood and guts though lol

Can you get her sponsership??? just a vague thought?

Jobs that pay well, solicitor? Police? (up the ranks) airline pilot!

Could you step up your existing business?

clumsymum · 02/02/2008 14:38

Well if you are serious about bookkeeping you could do all levels of AAT (accounting technician qual) full time (which in our part of the country fits with school times) in an academic year. Once you have that, you can get a job with a firm of accountants or in an accounts department, or work freelance as a bookkeeper.

You can also do the same qualification part time over 2 years (I think).

I don't understand how sponsorship works so don't know about that one.

Existing business will not ever make that kind of money, its seriously a very small business. I will keep that running but profit from that will be very little.

I am very serious about book keeping as I really enjoy that kind of work.

Just looking out for anything I may have missed!

what is existing business?

wangle99 · 02/02/2008 15:08

I own a franchise teaching baby signing. It serves a purpose at the moment (and I love doing it) but limited how much it will earn me!

Need to think to future and lay basis for future career and now seems like perfect time to do it!

So is that in a particular area?
Could you expand?
Are there evening classes you could teach or go into schools or regular weekly visits or nursery?

wangle99 · 02/02/2008 16:19

Yes in particular area, I could expand but where I live the geographic area isn't ideal because the amount people hvae to travel. Cannot teach evening classes, schools or nursery visits - not allowed under terms of franchise.

Although I love this I cannot imagine doing it forever, I will keep it running and get other people to teach for me :O)

OK so that's a non-starter in that case

So back to the book-keeping

S/E doing book-keeping for small businesses?
Get qualified & work for a company of accountants?
Get qualified/experience do book-keeping within a small firm?
Teach book-keeping?
