Hi. Does anybody know what way applying for NHS jobs works? For example with admin jobs, do you start with applying for band 2 roles and are then able to apply for internal promotions to band 3? I find it all quite confusing.

Also, can anybody who has a role like this help me with regards to scope for flexible working/ different working pattern eg a weekday off but working a weekend day? I know they say you can request flexible working but I wonder how that pans out in real terms.

PS I can't see it making any difference but I am in NI.

It depends on what experience you have. Entry level could be a band 3, for band 4 we'd expect some health/social care admin experience.

I just joined as NHS admin and its working all week with basically no flexibility to work weekends. You also have to start at band 2 even though I had previous experience and a degree. I think it can take a year to be able to move up. My current role is very basic and not challenging which is good if you want an easy ride but it’s extremely under stimulating and gets monotonous. The good point of working there is everyone is nice and friendly!

I started as B4 medical secretary with no previous NHS admin experience. Lots of years of other secretarial experience though - these skills are almost always transferrable.
