White lies

138 replies

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 19:08

I have recently been offered my dream job....... literally over the moon BUT!
Qualification specifications stated NVQ level 3- no problem I have a level 5 plus a wide range of others.
GCSE grade C or above- I lied
I did my GCSEs 25 years ago and my results were poor and not a C.

I have now recieved my job offer letter and contract which states I need to show ID for dbs checks as well as my level 3 certificate and GCSE certificates.

I'm now losing sleep as I lied in the application. If i come clean I may lose the job before I ve even started.
I could lie and say I don't have the certificates but they may ask me to obtain them from the examination board.
I thought about photo shopping the certificates but then thats fraud.

Most people tell little white lies on job applications right?

Now I don't know how to approach this without shooting myself in the foot. Shock

The job is working for the local council.

Check your level 5. Does it give you equivalency?

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 20:04

@wibblewobbleboard
I'm not sure 🤔 thats a good point

OP posts:
quietnightmare · 03/11/2022 20:05

Apparently according to google you can only get your results from your school. If your school still exits say you contacted them and they haven't got them

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 20:06

@Macaroni1924
I don't condone lying at any level and really didn't think it was that important but can safely say I'd NEVER do it again 🙈

OP posts:
wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 20:07

I'd contact the college where you did your level 5 and ask them if it gives equivalency.

Also see this.

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 20:08

@quietnightmare
Schools only hold records for 7 years but examination boards hold information for a lifetime. You can obtain copies of certificates at a cost of £49 apparently

I don't think it's that easy to get copy certificates. I work at a uni that offers apprenticeships. Students need GCSE maths and English to get their master's degree at the end. Despite being engineering graduates, half of them can't find their GCSE certificates and have to pass maths and English again. I'd give them your NVQ and say you don't have GCSE certificates and don't have a clue what exam boards they were with (because who does after 25 years??).

ZooMemories · 03/11/2022 20:10

This is not a white lie 😆 this is fraud and deception and you're an idiot.

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 20:10

@glassfully
Thats helpful thank you

@wibblewobbleboard
Thats helpful thank you. I also remember doing functional skills while studying my level 2 so I'll pull those out and see what it covers

RedDiamond · 03/11/2022 20:12

@wibblewobbleboard Thank you for your explanations. Sorry for all the enquiries but it explains it more to me.

It is a strange world we live in nowadays. A lot of us (including me because of my age) have a Post Graduate Degree.

My daughter says "how can you have a post graduate degree when I have MY DEGREE without you having to go to University and yours is higher than mine?"

She was fortunate. I made sure she had the opportunity to go to University. I spent 3 years, 2 nights a week to obtain my "older age" qualification because of my age. Is my Pg qualification to be looked on as not as good as a Degree?

No rights or wrongs here! Should I accept that my degree is less than my daughters?

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 20:12

@ZooMemories
From 1 idiot to another.....
got nothing nice or productive to say......... keep it shut

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 03/11/2022 20:14

I've lied since I got my results about my maths gcse grade (claim a c when I got a d)

No one has questioned it, I am a global head of ta and our pre employment checks would only look for this highest level qualification, not GCSEs or equivalent from 20 years back.

Hth

healthadvice123 · 03/11/2022 20:14

I don't even remember all my results exactly or what exam boards they were , I don't have the certs and no way I could prove them as all destroyed in my mums loft
But can prove all later things and relevant work experience
Surely they become irrelevant after a period of time and the last 10 or so years and work experience etc counts

Functional skills might be equivalent. Some are.

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 20:17

Thank you.
Lesson learnt 🤥🙈

OP posts:
wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 20:17

I'm not saying any are less. I'm simply stating the view flat a public sector employer might take.

wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 20:17

*that

Quveas · 03/11/2022 20:17

@emptythelitterbox
Its working for the local council (Children & Family hubs)
Providing support for struggling families

So, a DBS checked role where safeguarding and honesty are critical? Well yeah, "white lies" really won't matter.

Hint. "White" lies are LIES. And describing white lies as* *innocuous is racist.

As a recruiter I'd have accepted an explanation as to why your higher qualifications were equivalent. But that would be MY choice. I'd never recruit a liar. I could never trust a liar.

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 20:20

@Quveas
Wow thanks for that. Remind me who you recruit for?
Pulling the R card is a bit much

OP posts:
healthadvice123 · 03/11/2022 20:21

@Quveas how is it racist ?
Its also more ridiculous that someone is judged by exams they took 25 years ago and not by most recent results
I have never had to show my gcse certs , my dh never even picked his up as was a crap stage in his life
He just states what he took
I just guesstimate mine of what I think i got because they are irrelevant now

healthadvice123 · 03/11/2022 20:22

@Quveas also pretty sure a dbs doesn't check your gcse results ,

crumbsneverdid · 03/11/2022 20:23

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 19:34

@overthinkersanonnymus
I know right....
I'm no where near the same person i was 25 years ago.

I think I'm just going to have to play dumb and tell them I don't have the certificates and that I'm not even sure on the grades I got but then I stated a C on the application so will that go against me?

Don't worry about this at all. Show the certificates you do have. If they insist on the GCSE certificates get them and then play dumb. Say you thought you needed C's to do the NVQs, and have always believed you got a C.

You'll be fine. They won't even ask for them, I bet.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 03/11/2022 20:23

And yes, as someone who deals with DBS day in..they don't check gcse results

Quveas · 03/11/2022 20:24

healthadvice123 · 03/11/2022 20:22

@Quveas also pretty sure a dbs doesn't check your gcse results ,

No it doesn't. But it assumes honesty that perhaps it shouldn't...
