White lies

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 19:08

I have recently been offered my dream job....... literally over the moon BUT!
Qualification specifications stated NVQ level 3- no problem I have a level 5 plus a wide range of others.
GCSE grade C or above- I lied
I did my GCSEs 25 years ago and my results were poor and not a C.

I have now recieved my job offer letter and contract which states I need to show ID for dbs checks as well as my level 3 certificate and GCSE certificates.

I'm now losing sleep as I lied in the application. If i come clean I may lose the job before I ve even started.
I could lie and say I don't have the certificates but they may ask me to obtain them from the examination board.
I thought about photo shopping the certificates but then thats fraud.

Most people tell little white lies on job applications right?

Now I don't know how to approach this without shooting myself in the foot. Shock

The job is working for the local council.

Do they need NVQ level 5 and GCSEs?

DazzleRazzles · 03/11/2022 19:50

wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 19:47

Why is it ridiculous to check?

It's fraudulent to claim qualifications you haven't got.

Because unless you’re a 16 year old working in a shop most employers don’t give a shit about GCSEs

My cv is full of white lies, I still managed to pass extremely high gov vetting, they didn’t even ask for GCSE certs!

RedDiamond · 03/11/2022 19:51

@wibblewobbleboard I am not disagreeing with you but how on earth do people get copies of exam certificate 25 years after they have sat exams? Especially if they do not even know the Board they sat with?

Surely up to date Level 5 qualifications mean more than what they did as a 16 year old?

wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 19:51

My employer does.

Motnight · 03/11/2022 19:53

Normally employers are only interested in the highest level qualification, so I would show that and see what happens.

People have actually gone to jail for lying about their qualifications to employers.

You contact the board with your name when you sat the exam, the place where you sat it (if you have it) and the year and subject. As much info as you have. They'll charge you for it but they will reissue a certificate.

@emptythelitterbox
Its working for the local council (Children & Family hubs)

Isn't NVQ level 5 equivalent to a foundation degree?

I'd show evidence of the NVQ L5, point out it's equivalent to higher education and hope they don't ask you to obtain your gcse certificate.

Not sure if this is technically a white lie 😅 but equally think it's ridiculous they would ask. Surely your experience and more recent qualifications speak for themselves.

Good luck! You'll have to update.

wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 19:53

Public authority will almost always check. Sorry.

RedDiamond · 03/11/2022 19:54

wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 19:51

My employer does.

So is your employer someone who does need to know the ins and out of a potential employee because of security reasons?

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 19:54

@Whataretheodds
The job spec stated the candidate should be level 3 or above and hold Grade C or above GCSE

OP posts:
wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 19:55

What subjects at grade c gcse? Maths and English?

Angelik · 03/11/2022 19:56

Just say you don't have them and see what happens? I bet they say it doesn't matter

moistmingemist · 03/11/2022 19:57

I'd submit them and see if they realise, they might not and if they do just say you hadn't realised there was an error but in any case doesn't grade 5 supersede grade C. Better to sort now as an error and come clean otherwise you could lose your job and integrity for future references etc.

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 19:57

@Traisonthewine78
Yes this is true with the level 5.

Thank you for your comment I'm feeling less stressed out about it and veering away from digging myself a bigger hole lol.

Yes I will keep you updated

"You contact the board with your name when you sat the exam"

That is the sad thing, no everyone will remember the Board they sat with.

I know it is a knock on wall with head effect.

Public Service I do agree with. They are being paid out of the Public Purse so in that respect, they have to be whom they claim to be.

Swampthing55 · 03/11/2022 19:58

Honestly they are not going to care, if you were 18 maybe but you must be in your 40s don't worry about it.

Hawkins001 · 03/11/2022 19:59

All the best op

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 20:00

@Swampthing55

I know - I remember mine but if not, your school should be able to help you

I was involved in trying to get the qualifications for the bloke and I remember the rigmarole. He had a higher qualification but no maths gcse. Also in local govt at the time and he was failed probation and given a weeks notice and that was that.

Macaroni1924 · 03/11/2022 20:00

I’m for the say you don’t have them club. Worst case scenario they ask you to get them and they come back with different results and you play dumb. Worse to be thought of as a liar. I’m sure your level 5 will be sufficient. Lesson learned not to do it again if it’s making you feel this worried. I know in my job if I lie I can be struck of the register so taken very seriously.

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 20:02

@wibblewobbleboard

Yes Maths & English

It's the local council, for goodness sake. I'm still waiting for bolts for my wheelie bin that they promised 3 times to send out, 5 years ago. They're never going to remember to push you for a 25yo certificate. Just fob them off and eventually they'll give up. They must think that's OK because that's what they do with council tax payers after all. 🤔

wibblewobbleboard · 03/11/2022 20:03

It's likely that they will remember to check - I had to show all my certs on my first day along with right to work.

ClipsnCurls · 03/11/2022 20:03

@MarshaMelrose
🤣 sorry I maybe laughed a little more than i should have with this
