Bloody dogs!

I had a third interview for a job I really wanted this morning. It was first thing, and arranged too short notice for me to book an early drop off for my dogs at their day care. They are normally quiet so I didn't worry too much, but they literally barked all the way through.

When they started I apologised, got up, and shut them out, but they were clearly audible on the other side of the door. It was awful - distracting for me, and so unprofessional.

What made it worse is that, the minute I finished, I went out to them and they were like, "Ohhhh it was your voice!" and shut up. I didn't know whether to scream or cry.

Do you think I've totally blown it?

Everything crossed it’ll all be ok

Interviewers are human too….. and as a dog person I’d probably have asked you about them!!

FruHagen · 26/10/2022 21:01

Oh, dogs can be so annoying when they do this kind of thing.

Don't worry though, last job I got offered the HR lady rang me when I was picking up my kids from nursery and one of them had a bloody tantrum while I was on the phone. I couldn't hear what she was saying when she was asking me questions about the role. I still got the job.

Other job I was interviewing for at the same time I aced the 2nd interview and they invited me for a glass of champagne at a (unrelated to my interview) product launch that was happening in their office. Was convinced I would get job but didn't.

If you are right for role, dogs barking won't matter and if they miss you because of dogs then they aren't right for you.

My dog really acts up when we’re on a video call, it happens. Good luck!

CrabbitBastard · 27/10/2022 18:31

My dog does this on a call all the time.

What tends to help is if I take her out for a pee beforehand or give her a chew stick as a distraction. I've also told my postman to leave any parcels at the door so the dog isn't going nuts by the doorbell.

I just got a phonecall - I got the job! I am over the moon. The dogs aren't being sold on ebay after all.

Thanks, everyone, for your reassuring words.

Well done OP!

Oh I’m so pleased for you! I was about to comment that it wouldn’t put me off as we have all been there, even if not dogs, post men, amazon delivery guy. We barely get through a meeting without a delivery of some kind! No-one minds; they just excuse themselves.

I did an interview for someone once and she had to go off for a few mins mid interview. She messaged me afterwards to apologise and said she had told her in laws not to come round as she had an interview. They were not only knocking on the doors but hanging on the windows and she was so distracted that she had to go and sort it. I told her not to worry, these things happen. I couldn’t tell her at the time as we had other interviews but she got through and was offered a position (a promotion).
