When to make flexible work request?

I'm looking for advice on when to submit a flexible work request to go PT after my maternity leave finishes.

I'm currently four months into maternity leave and due to go back to work in May.

Is it better to put it in early or shall I wait until early next year?

Also, do people typically raise it with their boss or HR? Thanks.

I think as early as possible as it can be a very long process.

If you will need to arrange childcare around working hours do so sooner rather than later.

you have to give 12 weeks notice for a flexible working request. They should reply within 28 days.

As pp have said it can take a while to discuss and agree.

The best way is to start by having a conversation with your manager, that way you can understand what is and isn’t feasible. This can help you shape your request e.g. a lot of people automatically ask for a Friday or Monday as a NWD or very specific hours. it is also much better than a formal application dropping in their inbox.

It may also be worth a conversation with HR to be clear on the process and they may give a steer on what working patterns are more likely to be acceptable.
