My dh left civil service after 6 yrs last month and is thinking of applying for a new civil service job (different sector). Would his previous exp lift him up the payscale or would be a new entrant, would appreciate advice.

His previous service counts towards pay and leave, so yes he'd be 6 years up the payscale. (Doesn't happen instantly or automatically- you have to contact your pay section and tell them and it takes a few months)

Why didn't he just transfer if he's only just left?

it is a totally different dept. mod to dept of transport

I transferred ES to BA then BA to IR then to HO

It's easy - shame he left there are advantages to staying & tranferring

left mod job for private job for double wages, but not job promised. dept of trans job has just come up

He would be restored to the same salary - presuming same location (ie. London or not).

I did the same - but had a 5 yr gap in all and was restored to the same pay spine point - which had gone up by 5 payrises of course !

Don't you love the civil service? I'm on a 5 yr career break and was wondering what would happen when (if?!) I went back. Now I know!
