Surely only when you are actually offered a position? Confused .......

I work in recruitment and my advice would be... do everything you can to focus on getting the job (if you want or) and proving you are 'indispensable' to the organisation - then you have more power in your negotiations when they offer you the job. Every job has salary bandings so the more you prove your worth the stronger your positioning at the end when it comes to bargaining. Never ask in the interview.

But how on earth would you know if it's even in the right ballpark?

You should at least know salary band up front. I'm always asked my salary expectations before interview.

I would clarify the salary band pre interview via email with the HR contact setting up your interview, no point doing an interview if it’s nowhere near what you’re looking for.

But then don’t mention salary again until you’re offered a job.

I wouldn’t go to the time and effort of an interview without knowing they were in a position to offer the salary I was looking for.

What if you got to the point of being offered the role and it’s less than you’re on now?

You can clarify the band with whoever’s setting up the interviews, then negotiate if you’re offered a role.

I assumed the OP would have an idea of the salary before even applying for the position, or maybe at my lowly level I am just used to the salary being very clearly stated Grin.

Ask for the salary range pre application if its not advertised.

Wait til you're offered before negotiating salary unless specifically asked at interview.

If asked at interview I tend to go top end of range unless I lack experience. They will have budgeted for the top end so it will be hassle for them to get it re budgeted if you want more but not impossible if you want to play hardball.
