Transcribing work

I'm looking to make some money on the side. I just read a brief article with the "Top 10 Ways To…" and 'transcribing' was on the list. However, I'm sure I looked into this a few years ago and the consensus was that it is very poorly paid and competitive. Anyone have any recent experience in this that they are willing to share?

It depends on how quickly you can type. With a footpedal I can transcribe an hour of speech in three hours. I charge £1 per audio min. So £60 for three hours work. Is that poorly paid?

If you look on the long-running earn a tenner a day threads, some people on there do transcription work. Rev is one company.
I am a court transcriber/interpreter as a sideline (transcribe and translate at the same time) and I couldn't pass the Rev (English-English) for love nor money!
I don't think it pays brilliantly, but, like many of the "extra" type jobs, a bit is better than none at all!

Thanks both. I will look into it more.
