I am a financial adviser working in a specialised field. I have been doing this 20 + years and do enjoy my role.
I use the whole of the market and am very knowledgeable on the products and services.
I have had 3 jobs in the last year. One I left after a long period of working there, one was due to a huge error by my boss and I couldn't trust him and this one.
I am enjoying my third job. I like the people. The company are good. They try and look after their staff. I am hopefully just about to pass probation.
However ...
My husband has just been made redundant for the 3rd time in 18 months. He has been offered a job that gives him significantly less stress BUT it comes at a loss of 4k per annum for him. This makes our budget VERY tight and leaves us with little wiggle room.
If I carry on with my current role I should start to pick up commission in the next 6 months ish which should translate to monthly. This will mean we can start contributing to our pensions again and start to save, etc. However after hearing about my predicament a business development manager called me and told me they have a bdm role advertised near me and that I should apply. It would mean an instant lift of about 10kpa which would put us back to where we were, and there is potential to earn more but not the levels I could where I am. I know the provider very well. I really like their products and as I'm middle aged I'm wondering whether a less pressured job would be better moving forward. I haven't applied yet, mainly because I don't really know whether it's the right time, although I'm still in probation myself.
Money wise I'm not overly concerned because in the coming years we have expenses that will be coming to an end (child support and loan payments).
I am not sure when the opportunity will arise again in the future for the BDM role, and given the instability in the market for what I do I'm also weighing up whether staying working in a financial advice role, or working for a specific provider is the best way to go. The fa's are long established and are a large well known company strongly recommended by money experts. The provider is a long established provider with very good quality products and if I was going to break out and do this would be a choice of one of two providers.
