Maternity leave and term time only working

I'm currently on maternity leave from my term time only job and am taking 12 months maternity. In my previous job (not term time only) I was able to add about 6 weeks on to the end of my years maternity due to annual leave I hadn't been able to take while on maternity.
This time my line manager has said that as I'm term time only I won't accrue leave while on maternity but will get paid it instead. Surely this isn't right as everyone gets paid their annual leave but they also get to take the leave too!

If its a school- it does tend to run like this. You cant have annual leave like in a "normal job". You're holiday pay is paid instead and you must take holidays when not in term time.

I assume she means paid extra for the annual leave you can’t take instead of accruing it?

They're wrong. Regardless of your contract you are entitled to a minimum of 5.6 weeks annual leave. Have a look at the Harper Brasel case

Schools tend to do this as you don't get a choice over when you take the leave. They spread your pay over 12 months as well (rather than no pay you in august.

Nearly every teacher I know has this. Best thing is to try to time your leave to coincide with a holiday.
