Pay back sign on bonus?

I received a sign on bonus when I joined my current company.

According to my contract if I leave before 1 year then I have to pay it back. My 1 year anniversary will be January 4th 2023.

The job is very different to what was promised and so I’m looking to move.

I have a 3 month notice period. If I were to hand in my notice on 5th October to leave on 5th January, would that mean I avoid having to pay it back? Or do I have to wait for the 1 year mark to hand in my notice?

This is the wording on the contract:
In the event that up to and including 4th January your employment is terminated by the company or you resign, you will be required to pay back the signing on bonus in full

I think on the wording you have to stay on and hand notice after Jan 4th

I would read that as you needing to wait until
after 4th January to hand in notice.
