Background checks ... what's your thoughts

My wife has got got a new job and they are wanting to do a full background check on her. This is fine only we took out a massive loan 2 years ago to do an extension. We also have two mortgages but we have brilliant credit rating ( extremely good actually) never missed a payment etc but would that be something that would flag up in a background check? Would it be a problem to have so much debt or as long as there are no anomalies paying it off will it be ok ? It's made me worried

What background check are rhey doing? Does she work in finance? Some background checks are legal, for example cautions from police, ever been arrested etc.

It's for a head of dept job in a global firm. They just said a full background check. She wasn't worried about that until I mentioned it and now we are both panicking but as I say there have never been any issues with our repayments etc and she has an outstanding credit rating

No issues on the criminal side of things

They don't care about the size of the loan for those checks - just whether you've missed payments or had any judgements against you.

You wouldn't have been given those mortgages unless your bank was satisfied you could repay them anyway. So nothing to panic about.

DH passed full security screening while we had debts, we weren’t behind with payments or anything, we just had a lot of debt

DH had to pass financial checks after we both quit our jobs and moved. So we had masses of money coming into the account from a house sale, zero income, and had all just flown longhaul to see his extended family.
It was fine.

One last question, we have a vvv small business that we own that hasnt been in operation since 2018- will they go into detail on that or does the background check only research the person if that makes sense.

It really does depend on the check but if it is Kroll or similar they will search companies house for directorships. Whether they go beyond that depends on what theyve been asked to do but id make sure your filings are up to date

I would look at Companies House and check out whether someone has been upfront about their roles in the company, any potential conflict of interests, including others involved, or recently involved in the company. On the finance side, I would assume they would want to know whether she is living within her means so not open to bribery / corruption.

I would be guided by the seven principles of public life - the Nolan Principles.
