Asking to change job roles

Hi,

I work for a great company but my role isn’t quite what I want. There’s an opening in a department that I am more interested in, on the same pay scale.

What’s the best way to approach this? Do I speak to my line manager first or do I go to the higher ups? The opening has not been advertised for yet.

If they reject me, would that create any awkwardness within my current team?

Small company of 19, 8 of whom work in my department.

Thanks!

Wow, that is a small company. Are you on good terms with the Director of the business? As it's a small company, I would probably approach him/her about it if I were you. Failing that, I would go to the hiring manager for that role.

Personally, I wouldn't speak to your line manager as it provides opportunity for them to get in your way or put you off.

I wouldn't worry about awkwardness, especially in a small company. It's highly unlikely to be some big formal event. Probably just a yes or a no.
