Any Technical Writers/Authors on here? (Return to work/career change)

Hi! It’s my first time posting on here and I was just hoping someone might have advice/tips/etc.

After being a SAHM for just over 4 years I’m starting to look at returning to work and considering my options. I have a background in Instructional Design and Content Writing, however, I don’t think either role really felt like the right fit.

Within the ID role, I loved the process of taking the information and putting it in a format that was easy for the end user to understand, however, I found some of the clients difficult to work with.

Within the CW role I loved having the freedom to write based on the brief, but found it difficult to create my own ideas.

From this I have started looking at Technical Writing as it seems to blend the two parts I liked in my previous roles together, however, I was hoping to get a bit more general information about the role (I understand roles can vary based on sector) from someone currently doing it, if possible!

Thank you in advance for your help, sorry this turned into such a long post.

Hello OP. Was scrolling the work threads and found yours! I’ve always had a bit of interest in Technical Authoring/Writing and considered it as a possible sidemove. But I have seen very little demand for it in the area of the NHS I work in, so can’t really answer your question. I did find some great courses on Google’s learning resources for developers that run for 2 days in your own time that are worth trying out. Good luck!

@BobSacamono Thank you for your response! It’s nice to know there are others out there considering a move in that direction. Oh brilliant, I’ll definitely have a look at those courses 😊
