Quitting before maternity ends

Hi all. I'm due to go back to work I March when my maternity leave ends (looking to go back part time). To be honest I'm looking at getting another job, just not sure how and when to tell them that I won't be returning. I DONT have a contract and I'm on zero hours so technically I could just leave. I am only being paid statutory maternity leave. Can anyone help or been in similar situation thank you :)

‘Technically’ just leave then? Not sure what the issue is? Email saying when your leaving date is.

Wouldn't SMP end if she emails now? I would wait till your notice period arrives and email (say 4 weeks before your return)

No you're entitled to your full SMP even if you're no longer in employment

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've checked my maternity letter and it states to give the required notice stated in my contract if I don't wish to return. But as I don't have a contract I think I'll just do it the week before. Its only a small family business, should I email my resignation?

If it’s going to make no difference to your pay why wouldn’t you give them more than a week’s notice? If you know now that you don’t want to come back, they could have more time to find your replacement. Also, for resigning I would phone rather than email.
