To ask what freelance work you do?

Hi πŸ‘‹πŸ»

I really like the idea of going freelance.

Can you please tell me what work you do, how you started it and (if it’s ok!) a rough take home pay?

I currently work for a large corporate company. Plagued by strikes at the moment due to arguments over pay, terrible management and a lack of trust in the workforce. I am fed up.

Thanks!

I was freelance for about 10 years, doing accounts for local small businesses. But I had very many years of experience of already doing that, and also of implementing new accounting software and procedures, training staff and wading in to sort out other people's monumental foul-ups. I would normally get called in as a last resort because they were in a complete mess!

So really, it depends entirely on what your job is, what you are qualified to do, and how much experience you have as to whether there would be a niche for you as a freelancer.

I've been a freelance IT contractor for 22 years - work in defence/cyber. Started contracting after taking voluntary redundancy in 2000. I worked pretty much back to back contracts for the first 15 years, now try to take a few months off between contracts.

Ohhh both of those are very specific 😬

I think maybe I need to work out what I can do and go from there?

Yes I think you do. DH is a writer and editor, that doesn't necessarily need qualifications, but it does need experience and contacts before you go freelance…

I’ve done freelance Business Development, including setting up processes, teams etc. I also did general Business Consultancy. I have charged from Β£150 - Β£300 per day
I am now mostly in-house, it’s a relief not to have to deal with getting the clients etc, I probably earn a bit less on paper but it’s regular and I get paid holidays, medical insurance, pension.
I still occasionally do a bit of candidate assessment for a large PS organisation for Β£180 per day and someone I know just approached me to so some strategy work for him for Β£200 per day but I am undecided about whether to do it.
