New job and broodiness

Hi,

About to start a new job in a month or so. Been broody for about 6 months now and was on the verge of thinking let's start ttc, then I got this job. Am now thinking prob best to settle into job and not try until Dec at the earliest. I don't want new employers to be ticked off if I get pregnant soon after starting. Do you think being in a job around a year is a reasonable time to get pregnant? Or am I over thinking this? Can be a bit like that....

Ps. Been with DH 8 years, married 3 - no children.

I conceived dd (unintentionally ) on the night of my leaving party from job a. I'd been in job b for two weeks! I was really shocked and too scared to tell anyone until my probation was signed off (three months), but they were all really nice and it worked out fine. I took maternity leave and returned part-time. I would still be there now but we relocated.

Hi Somersetmum, ah that is a nice story. This new job sounds fab and I am hoping after I have a child it could be a job I could return to part time. It is just when to try that I keep being indecisive about.

If you really want the job, I think I would wait - at least until you've started working there . To get SMP, you have to have 26 weeks service at the 15th week before the due date so, in other words, you need to have started working for them before you get pg. Once you are an employee, they cannot legally get rid of you just because you're pg but, with probationary periods, they could always come up with another reason. Is it a large company? If so, you should be ok.

Yep it is a mid-size company and they have a very good maternity policy and treat employees well. Will definitely wait a few months, maybe a year. Guess I will just have to see how much stronger the 'urges' get!!

Cosmo I would make the decision based on what you want and don't worry too much about upsetting your employers. You may take a few months to get pregnant anyway, and even when you do, chances are you will be working for 7/8 months more anyway.
Certainly don't wait because of worrying about employers' reaction.

Thanks Flowerybeanbag - really sound advice. I am one of those people who worry too much about what others will think, but you are right. And I have thought about the fact that it could take a few months or longer to get a BFP.
I'll check out the maternity policy when I start and see what the score is there.

BMLB - hi! {waves like a crazy person]......

Just to let you know my experience:

Started new job end June.
The next day got a BFP (slightly unexpected).
Worked for 26 weeks and have applied for maternity allowance from govt (as not entitled to SMP from employer).

I'd say: Start TTC. You never know how long its going to take.

readyfornum2 · 23/01/2008 13:39

My experience is similar to lovemymum
I was working in a job and didnt like the location when the company I worked for before approached me and asked if I would go back and open a new branch (I had only left due to travel issues)
So I agreed and found out I was pregnant (totally unplanned) the day before I started back! The best part was that my deputy had also found out she was pregnant and was due 2 weeks before me!
I did leave after ML but only because I had to work every saturday and didnt have any family/friends to help with childcare
