To apply or not to apply, that is the question

I’ve been doing my role plus extra management responsibilities for 4 years, started as a way for me to gain experience and slowly turned into me asking for compensation for my additional responsibilities (line managing a team of 6 alongside my own full time role) a role was created, they advertised it externally, the person that covered me on Mat leave was successful, not me. She is now going on Mat leave and they want me to cover for 12 months.

do I apply or not?

part of me thinks well yes I can do the job easily and I will finally get paid for all my hard work (I set everything up for that part of the service)

the other part of me thinks a big hell no, sit back and get on with my contracted role, a much much smaller work load and have head space to apply elsewhere.

for context, they say I didn’t get the role as they thought the person was a better fit- I have also raised two grievances in the past, one for bullying one for maternity discrimination, both now resolved- a friend thinks this is a cause. My feedback for interview was great, no development points they said I scored very highly.

I'm not gonna lie, they don't sound like they appreciate you. Whether you apply or not, I would seek a better paid job elsewhere with all the skills you've gained.

You’re so right, and I know it. I think the stubborn part of me is like I refuse to quit but actually, what harm am I doing to myself by setting in and doing them a favour, it’s never been a two way street!
