Job offer but doesn't seem right..

I'm looking for a new job and I've been offered a sales assistant job for minimum wage in a high street electronics store.. only my contract states 10 hours a week but I'm working 15... It's minimum wage and there are also sales targets to meet. I've looked up a few reviews which say targets for stores are very high and unrealistic to meet.. I currently work in a cafe for the same wage.. I don't like the idea of minimum wage and having to meet very high sales targets or u loose your job. There's no commission for working as hard as you can to put those several thousand £££s into the till. Just the satisfaction that I won't get sacked. I hate the cafe work.. but this job offer doesn't seem much better. Anyone got experience of having to meet targets but getting nothing extra in return?

The contract thing is quite normal. 10 is your minimum. You’ll be expected/asked to work more at busy periods probably. But they have to give you at least 10.

I wouldn’t like a commission based job either. That’s just how a lot of retail works unfortunately.

Mol1628 · 30/07/2022 17:07

Not commission based. Target based I mean sorry. They’ll have a high turnover of staff I bet.

BeyondMyWits · 30/07/2022 17:13

So all your terms and conditions are based on 10 hours, but you'll be working 15, that is not strictly legal.

annual leave earned is based on a 10 hour week etc.etc. along with the meet targets or you're fired thing, wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

It sounds horrible. You would be better off as a self employed cleaner.

SglodionPysgod · 30/07/2022 17:20

I think you should tell us who it is. What a shitty employer. I bet they have a very high staff turnover.

Don’t do it. Something better is out there.

Nah. Take a swerve on this one. It doesn't sound a great offer.'

A new not many!

What dont you like about the cafe job? Do you dislike that more or less than you would dislike the target job?

DS has done minimum wage jobs in retail. Contracts are always for fewer hours than you are likely to work. Usually found that immediately Christmas he only worked the hours on the contract but worked way over in the run up to Christmas and average hours the rest of the time depending on staff holidays.
I wouldn't do a minimum wage job with targets if you'll be penalised if they're not met and not rewarded if they are. Plenty of other minimum wages jobs available in retail.

Sounds like a really bad, exploitative deal to me.

Get yourself a retail job with a set number of hours in your contract and no sales targets.

I would name and shame the company if I were you so we can avoid it as customers...
