Do I take this job or not?

Hi all. Please can you help me think this through.
I've been offered a new job. It's exciting, it's in a sector I'd love to work in. These jobs don't come up very often. AND it's in the town I live in.

Here's the rub:
I'd be taking a £12k pay cut. My current job is secure and has a brilliant pension. I'm not stressed and it's flexible plus I really like my colleagues.

Other considerations:
My husband has got a new role which more than makes up for my pay cut. I'm bored in my current role and stagnating. There aren't any internal roles with my current employer that excites me (I could probably do...but don't really want to).

Is the £12k pay cut and smaller pension worth it to do something fun / interesting?

Depends. £100k to £90k? I’d say yes. £30k to £20k, I wouldn’t as I wouldn’t want to be so undervalued.

Why is it a pay cut? Is there any scope to negotiate? The pension impact could be significant- have you looked at any projections?

Well I suppose it depends whether, as a family, you can afford this.
There's lots of people would like to work in a particular sector but can't because that sector just doesn't pay well enough for them to have the standard of living they want. Arts sector is obvious one that springs to mind.

I would say if you've done all the sums and you can afford it now and in the future with the pension then go for it. If its not working out financially you can always look for another job.
