Self employed work

Looking for some help as the HMRC website is very confusing!

The company I worked for went into administration 2 weeks after I had my baby and I was made redundant immediately (I had been promised 6 months Mat leave at full pay 😞)
Anyway, I'm finally getting my SMP now and have had a bit of universal credit but I've been asked to do some consultancy work 2 days a month for the next few months and have registered as self employed (I will be back to work full time by November)
I've worked out how to report it to UC so my payments stop and I know I can work up to 12 days a month whilst on SMP but how the heck do I report it to HMRC?
I've got a business tax account and have read all the self assessment info but can I report my earnings monthly to them or do I just wait til the self assessment period and report it then? I thought I may need to pay NI and it will be way less than the tax threshold but I just wanted to make sure I'm not doing anything illegal.
Can anyone help?
