Part time Holiday entitlement

Hi, I work 5 days a week, 4 hours per day, 20 hours in total. I have been working for the same employer for a few years. Holiday entitlement for a full time employee is 25 days and as a part time worker I am entitled to 12.5 days. The thing is I have been questioning how my holidays is calculated lately. I am told if I take a day off this counts as a day off but should it not be counted as a half day considering I only work 4 hrs and the rest of the day I am off anyway. I spoke to the employer who says it could as a day. I wanted so advise from people in the same position or who knows a bit more.

I used to do the same kind of hours. If you take a day off it’s a whole working day of yours off, so it counts as a day off. But it’s only a four-hour day. But as that’s all you work you still have the whole day off. You’re not taking a half day off and you?

Ok just re read your OP. You should be entitled to 25 4-hour days off.

Since you work 5 days per week and the same number of days across the year as a full-time employee, you should have the same annual leave entitlement as a full-time employee. The difference being that one of your 'days' of leave is only 4 hours in duration rather than 7.5 hours or whatever a full-time employee does.

Yes, you should have 25 days off, it's just a day is 4 hours to you.

It's often easier to calculate holidays in hours for part timers, so you can see the proportions more easily.

Legally you are entitled to a minimum of 3 weeks a year.

They should give you 25 days, if they want you to book full days off. Or 12.5 days if they are happy for you to book half days off.

Go back and talk with HR. Because it sounds like miss communication to me.

Yes, I work part time but 33 hours. If I take off one of my full days I use 8 hours of leave. If I take off a Wednesday where I only work 5 hours I take 5 hours leave. If I book the afternoon on a full day then I book 4 hours as that is half of my working day.

GoldPig · 05/07/2022 07:01

As said upthread you count your entitlement in hours- makes it easier.

GoldPig · 05/07/2022 07:03

Your working ‘day’ is 4 hours basically

You should get the same number of days as full time employees only your day will be shorter than theirs. Also i assume its 25 days plus 8 bank holidays for full time (legal minimum for full time is 28 days) = 33 days = 6.6 weeks holiday.

dementedpixie · 05/07/2022 07:23

So in days its 33 x 4 hour days
If in hours it's 33 x 4 = 132 hours
In weeks 6.6 weeks x 20hours = 132 hours

They have been doing you out of lots of holidays!
