I currently work as a secretary for 24 hours per week and have applied for a new job that’s offering 20 hours. I’m not that happy where I am but this new job is offering slightly less than what I’m on.

What would you do? Please someone knock some sense in me!

Happiness in work is more important than 4 hours pay. Go for the new job and see, you never know, there might be scope to increase your hours in the future.

Do you mean pay per hour is less, or the fact you’d be working 4h less per week? If you’re desperate to go and can afford the pay cut, I’d go and see what happens next.

Thanks both for responding.

Yes less hours and slightly less pay per hourly rate. My dilemma lies in the fact that I hate the manager but enjoy the work. The manager will never leave and is a bully. My sense of self is shot. I worry my lack of confidence will show should I get the new job.

I left a job which paid well a few years ago, manager wasn't a bully but didn't care, was lazy and offered no support to anyone at all. I took a job with a lower salary and fewer hours and have never looked back. I've been promoted since and I'm now on more than in the previous job. My manager is the best; supportive, works hard and cares so much about her team.

Do it Smile
