Hi all.

I'm aware that SLT has lots of different sectors.

But is anyone on here a SALT and can tell me a little bit about their job life, how it fits in with family life and school etc?

Is there much option to work part-time / term-time only or is it generally full-time?

Thanks Smile

This is an advert. It's not what OP asked for at all.

Hi! I'm a SALT!
From my experience the Band 5 jobs (this is what you'd be as newly qualified) tend to be advertised as full time but you may be able to negotiate?

There is a bit more flexibility for Band 6 or equivalent jobs. This would be for SALTs with about 18 months + experience generally. Jobs in schools tend to have the option of being term time only ( this is going to be my aim when my oldest starts school!).

It really is a lovely job with so many interesting areas to work in. A lot of jobs are in NHS/local authority which come with their own challenges and apparently it is the lowest paid profession for level of qualification so those are the negatives!

Oh sorry I see you asked for a bit more personal experience... I'm on mat leave at the moment. But when working I do 4 days a week 9-5pm. I'm community based so since covid I can work from home when I'm doing my admin. This works well for being near nursery to collect my DS and good for a bit more flexibility. I can accrue TOIL so it gives that bit more flexibility if I need to leave early/start late one day for example. It's manageable and worked well with one child.... We'll see how number 2 impacts that! I'd love to work 3 days a week but it's a squeeze getting my role into 4days so I don't think that will be possible 😔

As I said though ultimately I'd love to work term time only so I think I'd like to work in a school when DS starts school to have this as a possibility.
