How soon to apply for new job

I recently started a new job in my current workplace (promoted post and completely different area to my previous role in which I had 13 years experience at the same academic institution.) A very similar job has come up at a local uni which pays 10.000 more. I have not had a great experience in new role - toxic culture in new dept amongst many other issues. Is it too soon to apply for a new job when I have only been doing this one since end of March? Would you consider an application with such short recent experience and how would I justify this in a potential interview without sounding negative/money grabbing?

It's fine. Plenty of people do this when a job role isn't right for them. Besides, sounds like you've been with the company for a while anyway, it's just the job role itself that is new.

Apply for the new role! Worst case scenario is that you don't get the job. If you're in a toxic work situation, get out ASAP. If the new employer asks, just say you feel as though your current employer won't be able to offer you further progression/training, and just express how much this new company/role appeals to you and that you couldn't pass up the chance to apply when it came up.
