Possible age discrimination, should I report or let it go?

I’ve recently been having interviews as I am returning to work after a long break. I went to an interview a couple of weeks ago (at an opticians for a large high street store). It was all going well and he then asked me my date of birth. He made a joke of it and talked about star signs. I didn’t think anything of it until later and I realised he shouldn’t have asked me (I’m 40 if it makes any difference). The interview ended quickly and I haven’t heard anything since.

I had my ID with me as was asked to bring it so he would have found out anyway but in the end he said he didn’t need to see it. I don’t want to make a formal complaint, I’ve just recently been offered a job and I’m excited for that. I just don’t know if I should complain to the company or just let it go.

I wouldn’t complain as such, but feed back that the question was asked and that you are aware it shouldn’t have been. They may need to retrain people on their interviewing skills.

i think he can ask that, if he asks everyone though?

Thank you, I definitely don’t want to make a big deal out of it.

It’s a question that shouldn’t be asked in an interview unless the job requires you to be over 18. The same as asking your sexual orientation etc. It wasn’t on his sheet of questions because he wrote it in the corner of his notes so it didn’t seem a planned question.

I hardly think 40 is in the age discrimination bracket.

Yeah I didn’t think so either but it is. It actually starts at 40.

Or maybe I look 50😂it’s just sat wrong with me because I know it shouldn’t be asked during an interview.

I have been told ageism now starts at 40 and under which I can believe. Not at 50 or 60 but 40.
