I just wondered if anyone else has ever had this happen?
I interviewed for a job and was offered it subject to reference from my current employer.I got an email from new company saying my employer would not give a reference until my last day.I have never heard of this before,is it common?
What would be the reason,does anyone know?

10 years ago when I left hospitality after giving 5 years to a particular role, I recall the hotel refused to give reference until after I left them, I thought it was just to stop a person going sick after getting a favourable reference??.

Anyhow after leaving care a year later the same hotel who refused a reference until I was out of building apparently very promptly gave a temp insurance call centre job a reference very quickly.

I’ve also recently knowing no way round it turned down a job offer who after 6 hours of my company completing a day’s work trial but had still insisted on a reference and wouldn’t confirm start date until reference was received.

I never thought of the going of sick thing,it could be but they would have no reason to think I would,as Ive had 0 sick days in 6 years with them.Maybe its just how their devious brain thinks.
It did really upset and frustrate me.
