are you allowed to work part time while on maternity leave?

I'm on metrnity leave at the moment and due to go back to work in July. I am getting paid 50% plus SMP which will then go down to SMP in March / April.

If I started to do some part time work from home how would this affect my maternity pay? Am I allowed to earn any money and if I do would I have to tell my employer or the tax people etc?

Thanks

Obviously that should be maternity leave...

You can work 10 "staying in touch" days for your current employer for full pay and that's it, otherwise your maternity pay comes to an end.

I was thinking more about doing some part time work from home on a self employed basis - I would probably only be earning about £50 a week.

Thanks

srv there are some rules about working during maternity leave, see here on the working families website, has a section all about this.
