Supervision

How frequently do you feel you need a 1:1 supervision meeting time for you & your boss?

Personally I meet my line manager for a discussion once a month.

For those I line managed - the frequency of meetings is individualised. Some people benefit from fairly frequent discussions - a few times a week and others are fine with more infrequent discussion - once a month.

I don't think there is a one size fits all answer.

I have about two a year with my manager, but she's crap at her job. For the people I line manage, probably once every two months, but I'm always available for more frequent catch ups if that's their preference.
Why do you ask?

JanglyBeads · 11/05/2022 21:27

Hard to answer without knowing the industry, experience levels, pace of change in the role, interaction with others etc.

I sit beside my boss for at least half my day every day!

SmiledWtherisingsun · 11/05/2022 21:30

@JanglyBeads i mean actual 1:1 time just for you to talk about how things are going, how you're feeling, what could be better etc...

Wow @Blowyourowntrumpet 2 a year is not much. Is your boss overwhelmed maybe?

I think you are right @MajorCarolDanvers it can't really be a one size fits all thing can it?

I'm asking because I had always thought 4-6 weeks should be fine. But I also think sometimes it feels like it could be longer with out causing any harm.

I don't mean meeting to discuss work tasks / progress so much as "how are you & how's it all going?" Kind of time.

Although actually if you have lots of day to day contact (and get on, that's another key variable really, although not included in a formal structure of course), then you'll les need for formal 1:1s

mynameiscalypso · 11/05/2022 21:50

I have a formal 1:1 with the person I manage every two weeks and we catch up informally at various other points. Sometimes are 1:1s are much more task focused but I try to ensure that at least once a month/every 6 weeks we have more of 'deep' chat about how things are going (including issues with the wider team etc). I have the same frequency with my boss although he's a bit more hands off.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 11/05/2022 21:56

I have a 1:1 call with my direct reports once a week, it's not formal and minuted just an opportunity to review previous week, raise any pinch points or issues, plan the week ahead and flag anything that won't be achieved and have a general chat.

My employer has said that frequency of meeting is a joint decision. Like PP have said, it depends on the individual. If they are happy to work independently, time between each could be greater. If they need more direction, less confident, unsure of expectations then it might need to more frequently.
Either way, joint decision. You should also agree beforehand on what happens if one of you needs to cancel.

I worked at my last place for a year and never had one. One of the reasons I left...
