Working hours

I hope I've posted in the right place! I currently work a 36 hour week Mon to Fri. Works out at a random 7.2 hours a day and the entire company is on these hours to my knowledge. My question is everyone does 9 to 5 with 30 min lunch break and no other official designated breaks....when you take off the 30min lunch break its 37.5 hours.

Maybe I am being naive but are we not all technically working unpaid overtime? I just find it strange no one has queried this before so maybe I've missed something...

You all seem to be working 18 minutes a day for no pay. 7 hrs 12 minutes paid vs 7 hrs 30 minutes actually worked. Is there an unpaid additional break that no one is currently taking? Is the lunch break times at 30 minutes or has this become the default length of the break. There must be some explanation and I’m mystified why no one has noticed!

Is it civil service?

That's what I had thought, everyone just has so much to get on with they've let it slide over the years. It's something I'd not really noticed but a friend was asking about my working hours and breaks and then I was like oh I'm working for free it seems 😂

Are people working through a tea break? What do your colleagues think? Have you asked them?
