Requesting part time - when?

I would like to start applying for a new job but only want to work part time. Pretty flexible on the number of hours but this is just non negotiable for me as I have two small children. However, 95% of jobs that I could apply for in my field and my area are advertised as full time.

On what point do you ask them if they would consider part time?

  • before application
  • at interview
  • on being offered the job

Any advice would be appreciated! I totally believe most jobs can be done in condensed hours because you just work harder and smarter. Thanks

I spoke to my now boss before applying, and had a general chat about the role, then asked whether there was any possibility of it being 4 days. He said yes and was actually quite pleased as it freed up his budget for elsewhere! He said he'd not advertised it as part time as he didn't expect to get the right calibre of candidate Confused

Firstly keep an eye out for adverts with the #YestoFlex hashtag or Happy to Talk logo. That means that these employers are happy to discuss flexible working from the word go and and enthusiastic about it.

Secondly I would recommend that you contact employers before applying to ask if its something they are willing to consider.

If its not then you are wasting your own time as well as theirs applying for a job if you want part time and they want full time.

I say this as employer.

Thanks @pollyparttime that's really helpful. I can understand what he means. Not many people would want part time, especially in a professional role. It must be mainly new mums. I shall have to do that and be quite picky about what I apply for!
