Could anyone answer this question. If you give notice via letter, does the notice period start from the date of the letter or when it's read (if different)? Thanks.

It’s the date received, if you hand deliver/email on a Friday the fact they don’t read it until the Monday is irrelevant.

But also make sure they are aware it is a notice of resignation that you have handed in, or at least make them aware that there is a letter for them.

We had someone once who left a notice of resignation on the boss' desk, knowing that the boss was away for 3 weeks. So no one read it. Ended up leaving a weeks' notice in reality and really screwing everyone over.

Whilst happy to be corrected and I’ve never worked to it - I know a fair few people genuinely believe notice only starts next working day after formal resignation letter is served. I don’t know the why’s I’m sorry.
