Wages with covid

I don't know if this is the right place to post but I have a quick query.

My husband's work requires negative lateral flow tests the day before going (he works away) and for 4 days after he gets there. He was due to go to work today but has had to tell them he cannot go as his LFT is positive. They've advised once he has a negative LFT he can return. We are hoping this is as soon as possible.

Anyway, he's not "sick" so is not phoning in sick, the government have obviously changed all their rules regarding covid so there is no covid payment available, but his employer have advised that there is 0 pay for the first week of being off. It's their rules that are the reason he's off!

Can they do this?

From January this year my old company made it that Covid was no longer paid leave. Despite them making positive employees stay off. Unfair if you ask me. I've had it 3 times and I've been really ill everytime. I couldn't have worked in fairness however on the basis of no pay I would have dragged my ass in. No one can afford to lose pay! Especially not in these times!
I was lucky, back in January when I had it I could still apply for the grant. Due to my circumstances I was successful however if there is another income coming into the household the grant was declined. This happened to a friend and was told as she had a husband earning they declined her covid grant application for loss of wages.

Now it's all gone hasn't it. I really dont know how people are meant to take the hit. As far as I know you can carry on as normal now but employers still want you to stay off, unpaid

Yep that's exactly what happened and he has to do a "live" LFT when he gets there so can't ignore the rules! Absolute nonsense.
