How honest can I be?

I recently got promoted at work into a management position. I've enjoyed getting more responsibilities, managing my team and getting involved with bigger projects.

When I got my new role, I was approached about a project we'll call Project D. It's not something I was particularly passionate about which feels important as it focuses a lot on wellbeing and equality. I said I'd help however I could. It's an ongoing project which was led previously by someone who has now left. They have a lot of history I know very little about.

Fast forward a month and I've put in charge of project D with a group of very passionate people coming up with loads of ideas. I've had to tell them to hold off until I know from our high up bosses what is in my remit as leader of the project.

I feel terrible but it's really weighing on my mind. Would you try and keep going or say you'd like to step back?
