Any IELTS examiners here?

Hi there!
I am looking to change direction from online teaching into this field.
Can you tell me if it took a long time to get qualified to be an examiner, do you get much work, is it good pay and do you have to travel much?
Thanks in advance
Cyril 😀

I have done IELTS examining, also Cambridge FC, CAE and CPE and ESB. Like anything in ELT it's not well paid, but it's a good extra string to your bow to do in combination with teaching. I doubt it's possible to make a year round FT equivalent income.

Thanks for the reply @Horological

Is there much travelling involved, and how many days per month are examiners needed do you know?

How much work you get and how much travelling there is entirely depends on how many candidates there are and how many examiners they recruit. This varies depending on the time of year and from year to year. It is very unpredictable and that's why I don't think anyone makes a reliable FT income from it.

I don't want to put you off though. It was a really good source of extra income for me for years.

I, too, mark these exams for Cambridge. They have a large cohort of people working for them and they try to give everyone some work so it's doubtful you could earn a FT living from it. Rather it would be a stream of income to add to others.

I may be well off the mark but one of my ESoL students was chatting today about doing her OET instead of ielts so that might be worth looking into as an opportunity for you too

Dozens of mine were health care practitioners in their home country so seems a sensible way to go for them
