Talking about money at an interview

I haven’t been interviewed in about 15 years but I have an interview next Tuesday. It’s an Admin role but in a completely new setting.

The money isn’t great. It’s less than I am on just now but my commute would go from 35 minutes each way to less than 10. Plus, there is onsite parking. Still, we would be worse off, marginally each month. I am deeply unhappy where I am.

The advert for the job says up to an hourly rate. While I don’t expect more as I think they’ve said Up To in their advert so in my mind, that’s the max they would pay, would you say it’s ok to ask about annual increases or the potential to earn more? Is it ok to ask that at interview stage?

I don't think it would be great to ask about future earnings, but it would be good to ask about career development (for example, what would be expected of you in the role in the first 6 months, the first 2 years and in the longer term?). See if they use the words 'progression' or 'promotion'.

If the role itself doesn't change over time, I wouldn't expect the salary to either, except for cost of living.

Agree with that. I'd ask about career development rather than pay progression

Thank you. I’m glad I asked. This gives me things to think about.

Negotiate money when you get the job offer, not at interview.
