Colleagues persuading manager to change my working hours

20 replies

user62718822 · 14/04/2022 20:22

I work part time 8.30-2pm four days a week. My colleagues have always moaned about the hours I work they complain that it is busy when I leave. I work in a busy retail store that is busy from the moment we open to when we shut. They also moan that I have Friday off which is the busiest day.
We have a new manager who started last month and they have moaned to her about my shifts and she is going to change them. I feel so annoyed I work hard at my job and try and do as much as I can in the hours I work (which is more than a lot of the full timers who drag their work out.
They also complained because I always leave work on time 🙄

Are your hours contractual or agreed due to a flexible working request?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/04/2022 20:26

If the hours are in your contract then they can't just change them. How long have you done those fixed hours?

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo They were agreed when I returned to work after a long term illness.

What’s the question?

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

My contract just states the hours I work.
I have been working these hours for 12 months

Discuss the reason for your hours with your manager. If necessary put in a flexible working request/request for reasonable adjustment on health grounds.
Other staff members are most likely jealous of what many (particularly those with kids) would see as 'ideal' part time hours, but they may not understand the reason for them because it's none of their business

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/04/2022 20:33

Do you have it anywhere in writing that these fixed days/times are agreed? Outside of the contract. Are you on a zero hours contract?

TheArtfulBlogger · 14/04/2022 20:34

I have had to work PT a lot and get so fed up with the "lucky you part-timer" insinuations - as though I get a FT wage for PT hours!
Plus as you say, often we crack on our work and don't go for extra loo breaks/fag breaks/ long chats that others do when they have 8/9 hours to fill

LostForWords2021 · 14/04/2022 20:35

What do you have in writing?

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

No I have a permanent contract (20 hours). I don't have anything in writing it was just discussed with my old manager when I returned to work.

What exactly is the conversation you’ve had with your new manager?

user62718822 · 14/04/2022 20:38

@NoSquirrels

What exactly is the conversation you’ve had with your new manager?
@NoSquirrels She explained that the store is busy when I finish my shift and the rest of the team are struggling and that she needs me to start later and finish later.

My understanding is that regardless of if your hours are written on paper if you have been working them for some time it has set a precedent and they cant just be changed without consultation. Speak to HR

@mrsmolks ok thank you, she did mention something about consultation if I don't agree.

Take it to consultation as you don't agree. Start looking for another role on the quiet.

Do you finish at that time to pick up children from school? They can't force you to change your hours if you have child care. Are you in a union? If not, join one asap

Childcare is not relevant here one way or the other.

The OP either has either established an implied term and condition surrounding particular hours through custom and practice or she hasn’t. Childcare doesn’t come into it.
