Back to work after years away

Hello everyone! I am seeking a bit of reassurance…

I’ve been self-employed for about 4 years now but my work has been bitty and inconsistent - partly because of the pandemic but mostly because of maternity leave / childcare costs. I have 1 solid year where I was working consistently and another year where I was part time. In the time between I’ve been working on setting up a business, taken short courses, learned new skills/software and volunteered at a charity. I am though effectively a SAHM!

I’m nervous that my industry has moved on without me and that I’ll struggle to return to the same industry. My main concerns are whether the above appears to be a gap or whether it’s all explainable. I am considering retraining but wonder if anyone else has had similar experiences and found finding work again possible? I know of course it’s case by case but would be great to hear some positive experiences about returning to their industry after years away or years dipping in and out?

Thanks so much - any advice or motivation would be great!

I don't have much to help you with, apart from wishing you all the very best!

I too am self-employed working from home and thinking of getting back into the work force, esp. with the ability to WFH more these days.

What industry do you specialise in? That might help people answer your question as to if and how the industry has moved along in recent times...

Following! Same thing here.

I’d consider getting your cv done up by a professional maybe - they can help you word everything correctly and explain all your work and gaps well :)

good luck
