Help teachers - will be supplying in my child's class

DD1's school have asked me about whether I can do supply or not. I've been out of teaching for around 3 years but thought that I'd like to start doing some supply again so I said yes.

Well Tuesday is my first session and unfortunately it's in my daughter's class. Has anyone else been in this situation - how did it go and do you have any tips.

I have explained to dd that she must call me Mrs Jacanne and not Mummy and also that she won't be able to have any cuddles while I am being her teacher (I suspect this will be most difficult for her).

The other thing that is troubling me a little is how the other parents will feel about another parent being in charge of their dcs. What happens if I have to use any kind of discipline - I know that I just have to act like a professional and do what I would do if it was a "strange" class but it will be quite difficult I suspect.

Also, after 3 years out, I am terrified!

I've done it. A couple of days' work turned into several months too.

It wasn't a problem with DS. In fact, he worked better, and enjoyed the kudos for some reason.

Before I arrived, he was told to call me Mrs X. There were also a lot of my Sunday School kids in the school, and they had no trouble switching between names.

Had a year out myself after ds was born so know how you feel about going back! You'll hit your stride very quickly, like you've never been away.
DS not old enough to be in my class yet, but I've known (and worked with)lots of teachers who have taught their own children and it's never been an issue - for the teacher, child or other parents.
I'm sure it will be fine, good luck!

Thank you both - Scienceteacher - did you have any problems with the parents?

I did my first supply ever recently and was really scared but it was fine and I really enjoyed it.
My dc are not at school yet but my Mum did supply in my class when I was a child. I had to call my Mum Mrs * which felt silly really. Everyone knew she was my Mum so what was so rude about calling her Mum? It was far more giggle making to call her by a title.
Good luck !

I did supply in my daughter's class - iut was a little straange but in terms of teaching - fine.

Jacanne · 08/01/2008 20:10

DD said "I will call you Mrs * but is it okay if I laugh a little bit everytime I say it?"

Jacanne, the parents treated me the same as any other teacher.
