Hello

Is it hard to get online proofreading work in the UK? Will I need any qualifications beyond my Linguistics degree? Where are the best places to look?

Thank you!

I've seen some adverts for proof readers for books, but it was unpaid & they requested a review in return

i think there is much less of this work available now that computers can do so much of it.

You need proper proofreading training. The market is saturated with proofreaders so you need training to help you stand out. And to make sure you know what you're doing so you get offered repeat work.

Look at the CIEP or Publishing Training Centre. Don't look at any other providers.

There is MUCH more to proofreading than everyone thinks. It's not just a case of spotting typos.

After training, you will need to set up a business, decide on your clients, market yourself, etc. I suggest you join the Chartered Institute for Editing and Proofreading - lots of good advice on starting your own business, creating a USP, training, CPD, etc.

I've been an editor and proofreader for over 20 years. Happy to answer more questions.

That sounds unethical. When I proofread a book, I don't review it.

No, there is plenty of work available. Macros and software like PerfectIt have made the mechanical aspects of the job much quicker, but there is no replacement for an experienced human proofreader.

I don't understand. In return for what? The honour of proofreading their book? 🤔
