Working from home X2?

noideawhattouse · 23/03/2022 17:15

Hey everyone,

I currently have a full time job working from home. We are struggling a little financially at the moment and I am looking at the possibility of taking on a second job, working from home but part time.

Is this legal? Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks 😊

Yes of course you can.

As long as you declare the income.

What are you thinking of doing ? (I'm also looking for weekend work from home so interested to see if it's something I could do too).

It's not really a matter of law. You can have as many jobs as you like. However, typically full time jobs have a clause in your contract where they require you to effectively ask permission to take an additional role; they don't really want people coming in knackered because they've been up all night moonlighting. And obviously getting paid for a second job during the time you're supposed to be getting paid for your first job will get you sacked right quick, if you're caught.

Check your contract.

You cannot split yourself in half. Impossible to do two jobs at the same time. You'll probably lose both positions and be in a far worse position financially.

Unless you have very set hours like 9-5 for full time and 8-12midnight for second job. Never the twain shall meet etc.

You need to check your contract. A lot say you can’t have a second job without permission.

Check your contract. You'll probably have to notify and get permission from your current employer to take a second job.

And do not attempt to overlap the hours worked in the two jobs. That would be a stupid idea.

To clarify - not looking at doing both at the same time. Was toying with the idea of a part time job AROUND my current hours.

You'll need to check your contact/policies at current work and also tax implications. Plus ensure working time directives don't apply. But other than that go for it

Well I wouldn’t be happy if any of my team were doing 2 jobs at once. Fine if they are going one in the evening but if you’re meant to be doing both at the same time at home then no, you can’t give 100% to either which isn’t right.

Just read your update. I don’t think many companies object to staff taking 2nd jobs in the evenings / weekends. But you might need to prove that if you’re quizzed about having 2 working from home jobs. I’ve considered it as I’m saving at the moment and I have been doing overtime evenings and weekends so know I have the time to do it as my kids are older and I have a good few hours each evening. Have to be at home though or I’m not interested. For now I’ve got the overtime so not worth it whilst I’ve got that as that’s paid at a premium obviously
