How do core hours work?

Hey all, I am currently interviewing at a company and they have core hours between 10 and 4pm, I'm struggling to get my head around exactly what this means?

Does it mean that you can effectively work whatever hours you like, as long as you are working between 10am and 4pm ?

Thanks :)

It usually means the working day can be (for example) 7am to 7pm but everyone must work the core hours. The remainder of your hours are more flexible.

Yes. So you can start at 8 and finish at 4

Or start at 10 and finish at 6

Etc

That's what it means where I work we have to work 7 and a half hours and take at least 30 mins for lunch our core hours are 10-12.30 and 2.30-4 so you must be at your desk and working during core hours you can fit the rest of your day in where you want. Our office is open from 8-7

When I’ve seen it what it normally means is that if you are expected to work say 7 hours a day plus an hour for lunch you can start between 8 and 10 and finish 8 hours later. Earliest hours 8-4, latest 10-6.

It may not be totally flexible outwith these hours. In our office phones must be manned between 9 and 5. So we all work 10 to 4 and there is a rota for covering the phones before and after core hours.

We have an 8-hour, with a required 1 hour at lunch (well, we can work through lunch, but we can't finish any earlier). I've worked both 7-4 and 10-7 to avoid the worst of the traffic, but we are expected not to change hours around too often and we get a weekly attendance table with everyone's hours. Meetings should usually only be arranged during core hours.
