Holiday Entitlement- Part Time

Hi,

Im am looking to return to work from my 2nd Mat leave. On return from my first, I went down to 4 days a week from 5 days full time.
My holiday entitlement is calculated as full time allowance 25 plus 8 bank holiday & then this is prorated to give me my yearly allowance. When a BH comes around, this come out of my allowance, so I effectively have 18.5 days to take.

I wondered how other part time workers, have their holidays calculated?
Also usually you accrue BH while on Mat leave, I am planning on taking the full year before returning. Shouldn't I then get my BH back & not have to use my entitlement for BHs that occurred while I was on Mat leave?

Many thanks

I had to use my holiday that I'd accrued during mat leave before I came back. My holiday was then calculated as yours will be. Took me a while to understand the calculation (not helped by HR getting it wrong when I first came back) but I get it now. I don't work Friday, which generally means I end up with a smaller amount of useable holiday hours than someone who doesn't work Monday, although overall we have the same amount. I just prefer having Fridays off though.

I’m part time and my leave is calculated like yours. AL entitlement plus BHs divided by the percentage of a week I work. If you can not work Mondays then it works out better as you ‘lose’ fewer AL days to BHs. You also get more of the childcare you’re paying for. Or my work sometimes let me move days in the week so I can still work a full week even if there’s a BH.

Over Mat leave you should accrue both the AL and BHs for months you’ve been off. My work jut added these to my entitlement for the following year. I used them to extend my Mat leave (but it paid that last month) and to cover the inevitable sickness days once the baby started childcare.

We would add the bank holiday entitlement onto the normal holiday entitlement making a total of 33 days then pro rata it by dividing by 5 and multiplying by 4.

You can;t round down so that would be 26.5 days (some places might round up to 27 days.

Or, depending on the wording of the contract you could do the same calculation but separate the two elements eg

25 days holiday becomes 20
8 bank holidays become 6.5 (or 7)

It all works out the same.

Some places will allow you to carry over holiday accrued during maternity leave but some will want you to take it before your return.
