Following another post, I thought it might be a good idea if we all put down our jobs/skills, in case we can help each other out by passing any business to each other!

So far we have:

JANSELL: Publications Designer: newsletters, leaflets, brochures, invitations companies or individuals)

TIGERMOTH: events management and copywriting

MORNINGPAPER (me!): Website design / website consultancy (websites from around £200 per site - billy bargain)

Anyone else?!

OP posts:

Lolasmum - don't know if you'll see this as it's while since you posted. Re your dh hating being a merchandiser - sounds like he's just with a duff company. My dh loves his job, loves fashion and shopping and loves all the numbers and bean counting and psychology that come with being a merchandiser. He has never been a buyer though (how does your dh manage to do both???) What area is he in? Anyway, dh has worked for a number of high street names - mostly he has enjoyed his work, but one job for a large, cheaper fashion brand was a disaster, horrid people, horrid culture and he hated it, left by mutual agreement after a year or so. He got his current job a few months later. The probs he seems to face in retail are that it's not very well paid, even when you are quite senior (Philip Green apart) and it's hard to get to the top as there are just not many great fulfilling positions around if, like dh, you want to stay selling products that you love and believe in. So he has his moments of despair too, but right now he is very happy, things are going well and he's glad he stuck where he is for a while. Also his current employers are pretty family friendly, and that has helped a lot while we have young children. You can CAT me if you want to discuss retail hubbies!

Flum · 24/11/2004 16:51

Accountant (SME's and Insolvency)

Flum · 24/11/2004 16:55

I am thinking of becoming SAHM one day.

I think when people ask me if I work though I will say ' Oh yes, I am in Household Management '

Mind you that sounds almost as dull as Accountant.

I think I will say Lap Dancer (private) - hubby only!

willow2 · 24/11/2004 21:09

Me: Freelance journo' (ex TV producer/Director) no real speciality - used to do a lot of consumer journalism, now write pretty much anything, not that fussed what as long as they pay my invoice.

DS: Music Biz

marthamoo · 24/11/2004 22:15

Slug, I think your dh and mine would get on like a house on fire

I'm not allowed to tell you where he works (I just typed it and he waved his hand at me in a "don't do that" type manner - he's on the 'phone) but it's our local hospital so you wouldn't have to be Sherlock Holmes to work it out!

florenceuk · 24/11/2004 22:33

Lolasmum · 25/11/2004 08:26

Wilbur, it's good to hear that not all merchandising jobs are horrible! Since I posted dh has had an interview for another company (Alders). Fingers crossed. He's hated Homebase from the moment he got there 2 years ago. He was at Woolworths before where he was a lot happier. He has considered getting in touch with the home department at Monsoon as he's very impressed with their fair trade policy.

Mr CookieMonster : self-employed gardener

wordsmith · 25/11/2004 16:10

Have read them all now. What fascinating jobs. Now realise I have to add my DH - he's a recruitment consultant dealing with designers, copywriters, new media types working in advertising. Anyone looking for a job in this field send him your CV!

DS1&2 are going to be plumbers or electricians if I have anything to do with it. have you seen how much they charge? We will need someone to support us in our old age, what with our pathetic pension plans.

beansmum · 25/11/2004 16:16

me - maths student, I want to be a tax inspector eventually (should i have admitted that?)

Tinker · 25/11/2004 16:18

Gulp. never though I see the words "I want to be" in the same sentence as "tax inspector"

Tinker · 25/11/2004 16:18

forgive typos, typing on my knee in teh dark

beansmum · 25/11/2004 16:24

I think my mum was more shocked when I told her my career plans than she was when I told her I was taking a year off uni to have a baby!

Tinker · 25/11/2004 16:26

Am only shocked beansmum since it is akin to my job. Sssh, can say no more.

sis · 25/11/2004 16:31

Oi Tinker! dh (used the abbreviation just to irritate you!) is a tax inspector and - here is the worrying bit, he really wanted to be a tax inspector before he joined the Inland Revenue!

What I do is a bit irrelevant as I am being made redundant with effect from tomorrow!

Metrobaby · 25/11/2004 16:34

Metrobaby: Currently on Mat leave. Software developer to front office in city investment bank.

Mr Metrobaby: IT technical architect (ie geek term for designing and developing large database systems)

I hasten to add though neither of us ever has IT related thoughts in our spare time - or at least dh hasn't admitted to it. However we have argued over who is going to teach dd and ds how to program

Both of us would love to do jobs that would be more 'worthwile' like teaching or social work sigh
