Why do they need a bank statement?

I've been offered a new job and they have asked me to provide 2 forms of ID, proof of address, national insurance number and a bank statement dated in the last 3 months.
Why, if I'm providing proof of address in the form of a council tax bill and providing my drivers license that has my address on, do they also need my bank statement?

Maybe they need to check you have an active bank account? What kind of company is it for?

It does seem strange.

Whatadayyyy · 28/02/2022 12:09

Have you asked them why? Is it a job that requires enhanced type security checks?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/02/2022 12:09

Isn't the bank thing just to confirm that they are paying your salary into your account?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/02/2022 12:10

Just an enhanced check- black out all financial info

Associatepeggy · 28/02/2022 12:11

What's the job? Or what industry?

I assume you can black out the actual transactional Information so they can only see the top?

Sharrowgirl · 28/02/2022 12:12

They need to make sure they are paying the person they think they are.

SparkleSky · 28/02/2022 12:13

I'd be tempted to ask the employer what it's for and say you're providing the council tax statement for proof of address. If it's to check it's your account for salary as pp said I'd ring the bank up and ask them to post you a letter with your account details on so you have something to give that doesn't have other personal info on about all your transactions etc.

mathsquestions · 28/02/2022 12:19

You may be able to print a statement online for just one day

newjob2022 · 28/02/2022 12:31

It isn't for a high profile job or one that would require a pvg, it's just a cleaning job for local offices.
I assumed it would just be for proof of address but they've asked for that separately so I wasn't sure.
I've just checked and I can print a days statement off online so I'll just do that I think and blank off the payments as surely they won't need that part.

These are standard request for proof of ID three forms of ID all within last three months. You can black out the balances/transaction as they have no need for that information.

Comefromaway · 28/02/2022 12:38

I carry out New Starter checks and have no idea why if you are providing other forms of ID. It could be to check for Modern Slavery?

80sMum · 28/02/2022 12:39

I used to do DBS checks on prospective employees for the company I worked for. The ID documents are purely for the purpose of identifying you and there is no need for your new employer to see any of the transaction details on your bank statement, nor the balance on the account. They just need to see that it's a legitimate bank account, in your name and with your address and that it's recent, usually within the last 3 months.

It really depends on what work is done on the offices though.

We extra security checks because we worked in the same office building as banking call centre

Thanks for all of your replies, they've been very helpful

It all depends on what you use as your primary ID. If you had a passport and driving licence and council tax bill they wouldn't need your bank statement. But assuming here your licence is being used as the primary ID, your council tax statement as your second ID so they need a 3rd thing with your address on and bank statements are usually the easiest to get. Its an odd system where we have to see the address on different documents to the primary and secondary ID, computer says NO basically

Comefromaway · 28/02/2022 12:50

Employers have to see a form of ID that shows the right to work in the UK such as Passport or Full Birth certificate.

If a DBS check is also being carried out then 3 forms of ID in total are needed, one of which needs to show date of birth and one current address.
